Well, how did our first week of Spooky Season go? Did we cop a Halloween themed tote from Trader Joes? We didn’t, but better luck next time. The Desert is blooming with things to do, as temperatures drop this week and the snow birds flutter in from their northern perches. Be sure to wear your deet, as you can never be too careful these days as you will see below.

West Nile Found in Mosquito Samples in PS
Talk about a buzz kill: mosquitoes from a routine trap near South Camino Real & E. La Verne Way tested positive for West Nile—the city’s first WNV-positive sample this year and the 11th in the valley (most other positives this season have been St. Louis encephalitis). No human cases reported so far. The Vector Control District is posting advisories and rolling out ground and aerial treatments.
Do your part: dump standing water weekly (buckets, plant saucers, anything that collects rain), and use an EPA-registered repellent (≥30% DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR3535). Skip the essential oils and citronella candles—they’re not reliable protection. If you get fever, headaches, or body aches after bites, call your doctor.
